We are proud to announce the publication of INTERSOS’ Annual Report 2023, a document that reflects our ongoing commitment to respond to humanitarian emergencies and support the most vulnerable communities.
This year’s Annual Report is a testimony to the challenges faced and the successes achieved, with a transparent and detailed overview of our activities and achievements.
In 2023, INTERSOS operated in 23 countries, bringing humanitarian assistance to 4.9 million people in need. With 285 projects implemented thanks to the work of 3,835 humanitarian workers, we continued to provide support in areas affected by conflict, health crises and natural disasters. The primary reasons for our commitment remain unchanged: the people we assist and our ability to offer rapid, adequate and meaningful responses to their needs.
In addition to our ongoing protection, health and nutrition activities described in detail in the country sections, we were able to respond to multiple new emergencies by assisting the Syrian population following the earthquake in February, supporting the population affected by massive flooding caused by the collapse of the Nova Kakhovka dam in Ukraine, and in Libya after floods devastated the city of Derna. In Chad, Central African Republic and South Sudan, we responded to the needs of people fleeing the war in Sudan. We also laid the groundwork for an intervention in Sudan, planned for early 2024. At the end of the year, the new mission in Mali became fully operational, while the registration process in Ethiopia was still ongoing. Our ability to intervene promptly was possible thanks to close collaboration with local communities and partner organisations.
INTERSOS’ integrated approach, combining protection and health, enabled us to provide comprehensive and multidimensional assistance for the most vulnerable people. We have continued to implement protection programmes that include psycho-social support, legal assistance and the management of complex cases, such as survivors of gender-based violence, unaccompanied minors and the most fragile categories of the population: women and children. In parallel, through our medical programmes we have ensured access to primary health care, offered treatment for malnutrition and sought to improve sanitation in the 23 countries of intervention.
The highlighted activities and data, documented in the Annual Report, are a reflection of our commitment and the dedication of our field staff, who work every day to turn challenges into opportunities. As we celebrate our achievements in 2023, we are aware that humanitarian challenges continue to grow. With 301 million people in need of humanitarian assistance in 2024, INTERSOS remains determined to strengthen its capacity to respond and assist those most in need. Our goal is to continue to intervene in crises with a professional, transparent approach focused on people’s needs.
