SUDAN

In Sudan INTERSOS intervened in DarfImmagine astrattaur immediately assisting Darfur refugees in Chad. There were initially accessibility problems and INTERSOS had to put pressure to be able to intervene in the current worst humanitarian crisis. Finally, when permits and visa were obtained, INTERSOS started activities in June 2004 and is currently present with a coordination office in Khartoum and four operational basis in Al Geneina, Habillé, Forobaranga and Garsila. The logistic support of the four basis in the heart of Darfur allow INTERSOS staff to be present in the field evening villages often forgotten by humanitarian aid. The population, displaced by the civil war, live in a very difficult situation. Health emergencies caused by the outbreak of epidemics, violence against the displaced as well as resident population, are still on-going.
In Sudan, as in Chad, INTERSOS works with UNHCR to analyse the situation of the refugees and displaced people, both in Chad and in the areas of origin in Western Darfur. The objective is to have a reliable collection of information and a complete picture of the humanitarian situation in the whole region both concerning basic needs, such as water, food, education, health, and concerning the monitoring of the security conditions and the level of vulnerability of the displaced population., in order to be able to prepare the return to their places of origin both of refugees from Chad and of internally displaced people.
