Who,
What, When, Where, Why: INTERSOS
WHO
INTERSOS is an independent no-profit humanitarian organization
committed to bring assistance to the victims of armed conflicts
and natural disasters.
INTERSOS was established in 1992 with the active support
of the Italian Trade Unions with the objective to express
solidarity and timely intervenes with an effective response
to emergency situations in order to ensure basic living
conditions to the population affected by disasters and conflicts
in the poorest regions of the world.
INTERSOS operational structure is composed as follows:

The Statutory bodies making decisions, formulating strategic
orientation and controlling the activities and financial
resources of INTERSOS are the Assembly, the Council and
the Auditing company.
WHAT
The main sectors of activities of INTERSOS are:

Assistance to refugees and internally
displaced people by setting up, organizing and managing
refugee camps and collective centers.

Emergency relief to civil populations
affected by conflicts, paying special attention to the
most vulnerable groups (women, aged, children) through
distribution of food and basic necessities, family reunification
for non-accompanied children, reintegration, education
and the demobilization and rehabilitation of child soldiers.Return

fugees and displaced persons to their
homes. Support to housing and restoration of community
services, as well as economic recovery and democratic
processes. Local building and vocational training abilities.

Structural and functional rehabilitation
of hospitals, health centers, schools, aqueducts, sanitation
systems and other social and cultural structures.

Humanitarian clearance of anti-personnel
landmines and unexploded devices, mine awareness programs.

Support to processes aiming at resuming
dialogue, promoting peaceful coexistence and reconciliation
WHEN
INTERSOS involvement is finalised to give an
immediate response to humanitarian crises by bringing
timely relief to the affected population, but it continues
throughout the post-emergency, transition and reconstruction
process.
In the last two years, while continuing with project implementation
in those countries where it was already present, INTERSOS
has initiated humanitarian activities in the following emergency
contexts:

process to Afghanistan

Drought, war, mine action and reconstruction
in Afghanistan

War, mine action and reconstruction
in Iraq

Civil war in Liberia asn support to
the health structures

Sudanese refugees in Chad and support
to the receiving communities

Assistance to local population and
internally displaced persons in Sudan (Darfur)

Assistance to the tsunami victims
in Sri Lanka
WHERE
INTERSOS intervenes everywhere there are objective needs
and the possibility to operate. The countries of operation

WHY
Homo sum, nihil humani a me alienum puto: "As
a human being, nobody can be alien to me". This is
the synthesis of INTERSOS basic principle, from which all
INTERSOS values originate, that characterises the philosophy
of all INTERSOS interventions. This statement emphasizes
the core position of human being and implies the respect
of the principles of equality, justice, peace, solidarity
and therefore the duty of each individual to support
all people in need and those who are suffering, in an unconditional
way and regardless of any consideration of race, belief,
religion or any other nature.
The core values of INTERSOS are expressed in its Fundamental
Charter.
