ERITREA
INTERSOS was active
in Eritrea from 2000 to 2003.
INTERSOS' work in
Eritrea centered around response to the needs of the civilian population
and of internally displaced persons. In its four years in Eritrea,
INTERSOS managed camps
and rehabilitated water systems, as well as supported the return
process of Eritrean refugees from Sudan. INTERSOS'
office in Eritrea was closed in 2003, following a political decision
by the Council to denounce the human rights situation in the country,
which was deteriorating daily. In a dictatorship with no space for
political debate, no freedom of press and opinion, with militarised
local administrations, and endless abuses on the population deprived
of the most basic rights, INTERSOS
found it difficult to support continued work in Eritrea. INTERSOS
supported the aspiration for independence of the Eritrean people
in the Seventies: with even more strength we denounce the degradation
of human rights in the country.
