ANGOLA
INTERSOS
operations in Angola began in 199
6,
during a lull in the Angolan civil war from 1994 to 1998. During
this period, INTERSOS conducted emergency activities to address
the basic needs of the population
(food, water, shelter, etc.), as well as de-mining activities
and support to mine victims in Angola, a country among the most
affected by landmines and unexploded ordnance in the world.
Following the signing of
peace accords in 2002, Intersos entered a new stage in the Angola
mission, characterized by continued Mine Action projects including
mine clearance, mine risk education, landmine impact survey and
(up until 2005) victims assistance; construction and management
of transit refugee camps to support the return process especially
targeting women; improving liv
ing
conditions in rural areas and in the areas of return through the
rehabilitation of health structures (hospitals, clinics, health
centers), schools, water systems;
designing and implementing training centers and training courses
for construction builders and health operators/nurses; institutional
capacity building, especially in the water sector.
Currently, with about 200 national staff and 5 projects in 4 provinces
